What Are The Makings of a Successful Motivational Speaker?

Motivation can do wonders. It proves that the mind is stronger than the body. People are capable of rising above the odds just by being motivated enough. We see differently abled people doing physical activities none of us could dream of. We observe people rising from very humble, poverty-stricken environments to become millionaires and celebrities. Middle-aged individuals scale tall mountain peaks, and extremely shy individuals become politicians, public speakers and heads of state.

What Do Motivational Speakers Do?

If there’s one thing that characterizes all such people, it is the fact that they were motivated to do great things. And motivational speakers look to impart that motivation, that fire within, to their audiences.

Motivational speakers are often called to address company employees, students in educational institutions, participants in religious gatherings and others who wish to get more from life. What the motivational speaker does is transform the perspectives of the audience and challenge them to greater tasks and goals in life.

Connecting to the Audience Emotionally

To produce the desired results in the audience, there is an emotional quotient involved plus some analytical thinking and problem solving. So while the speaker must present the facts and some logical reasoning, he/she must be able to appeal to the emotional side of the audience as well. Or they wouldn’t feel connected to what the speaker says.

Entertain With Anecdotes or Stories

Always make sure you have an interesting story to tell. It not only has to entertain, but also convey a point. It should make them think, not just while you say it, but long after the speech has ended. It should be motivating them for the rest of their lives. Every time they remember it, it should motivate them for greater things.

Empathizing With Audience Needs

Again, you also need to empathize with the needs of your audience. Adequate research will help you understand what your audience struggles with the most. Once you’re able to empathize with those struggles, you immediately build a bond with them, a bond that is hard to shake off.

Be Confident and Show Confidence

As a motivational speaker, you should not only be confident in your abilities but let your confidence be seen by others. Only if your confidence is seen by your audience can you convince them to break the barriers and follow your principles.

Don’t Cut Down on Preparation

No amount of preparation is too much. Organizers who hire you expect a positive change in their audience and the ability to rise above the occasion. So make sure you do your hard work and take time to prepare your speech, the anecdotes you’re about to present, the theme of the speech, the call to action, etc. Remember, your reputation hinges on it.

Satisfying all these requirements is renowned motivational speaker Peter Theodorou, whose presentation and speeches have transformed employees and even communities. These have made him one of the most sought after speakers out there.

What Makes a Strong Motivational Speaker?

The mind is often considered stronger than the body. That’s why you have people managing to be happy even in adverse circumstances. And that’s what people in corporate circles with seemingly unattainable goals need to master too – getting their mind to do things they never thought possible. It’s easier said than done though. They need motivation to rise above the odds and a motivational speaker instills this in them. That’s why you have companies hiring motivational speakers.

Start With an Anecdote That Entertains and Connects to the Audience

What a motivational speaker does is raise the interest level of the audience first with an interesting and thought-provoking anecdote. By the time the story is over, the audience is ready to think what the story is about and what to take from it. That enthusiasm is all the motivational speaker needs to take the audience through the rest of the speech, which contains insights to tap into their hidden potential. That thought-provoking story makes them sit and think and also seems to metaphorically connect to their lives so that they feel the speech has something they can incorporate.

A Powerful Voice and Confidence to Go

The speaker needs to have a great voice to rise above the surroundings and keep the audience hooked. The concepts and ideas should be presented convincingly and confidently. Confidence is everything for a motivational speaker. They need to be sure of what they say and believe in, to be able to convince their listeners.

Empathizing and Striking at the Root of the Problem

None of these strategies work, though, unless you can empathize with your audience. Only empathizing with what your audience goes through can help you win their trust and make them eagerly listen to you. For that, you need ample research into your audience - why the motivational speech has been arranged, and what the organizers hope to attain with this. That can help you target those exact requirements and develop and present strategies to help them overcome their issues and attain their goals.

Keeping It Engaging With Humor

Machinery needs lubrication to perform. The audience too needs something to keep the yawns down, despite the fact that you’ve empathized with them, spoken with a great voice, presented an interesting anecdote and earned their confidence. You need to add a touch of humor. That’s the lubrication that could keep the audience’s comprehension machinery running like clockwork through the length of your speech. It will add a certain element of engagement and liveliness to the whole session.

A Power-packed Conclusion

Finally, it is important to conclude with a note of hope, encouragement and strong exhortation to get started with challenges and eat them for breakfast! Let them have the fire in their heart.

Experienced motivational speaker Peter J Theodorou has motivated professionals in various organizations and enabled them to live up to their hidden potential. That has propelled their organizations to rise on the efficiency and the profitability scale while ensuring satisfied employees.

The Finest Hour

A motivational speaker should never treat his work as just another job. He or she is involved in making the lives of others more productive and fulfilling. And along the way it makes your life more fulfilling as well, when you realize how many people’s lives have been changed by what you said on stage on a given day.

If you go back to how it all began, motivational speech had its origins in war cries. Smaller or less powerful armies often had to face mightier foes, and kings and generals of the weaker forces would press them on to dream bigger and have full confidence in their abilities. They were told that even the mighty army facing them was no match for their courage and might. It instilled determination in them. Such speeches are recorded in religious and historical texts.

In the 21st century, we have no greater example of a motivational speaker than Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain during the dreadful years of World War II. The famous Battle of Britain was the air battle which would decide the fate of the democracy in the Western world. On the eve of this battle, Churchill made his most famous motivational speech urging Great Britain to fight for its ideals and stand firm against the onslaught of the despotic Axis powers led by Adolf Hitler. Here are some excerpts from this speech which is called “The Finest Hour”:

The Battle of Britain is about to begin. On this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization…Hitler knows he will have to break us in this island or lose the war.

If we can stand up to him all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad sunlit uplands; but if we fail, the whole world, including the United States and all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister and perhaps more prolonged by the lights of a perverted science.

Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty and so bear ourselves that if the British Commonwealth and Empire last for a thousand years, men will still say, “This was their finest hour.”

We know that Britain won the battle, which was a decisive blow to the Axis forces. But along with the fighter planes and anti-aircraft guns, Churchill’s words played a big part in saving Britain and the entire Western world from despotic onslaught of the Nazis. It was at a time when Hitler’s forces were marching ahead through Europe, securing victory after victory, particularly the French victory. Churchill knew this battle had to be won or there would be no stopping him.

The British Royal Air Force delivered, and gifted the country its “finest hour”. These days too there are decisive battles being fought, but they are in corporate circles were employees and senior staff need to beat the odds to meet deadlines and help their organization soar above the competition.

As Peter Theodorou has realized over the course of his career, the motivational speaker plays the role of raising employee morale and making them experience “their finest hour”.

How a Motivational Speaker Inspires an Audience

Motivation is available for free, but is still hard to come by. When faced with a hard task to do, or an arduous mission to accomplish, motivation evaporates in the heat of discouragement and desperation.  Boredom can sap motivation, and so can the lack of a clear sense of direction. Though youngsters often have a fire to succeed burning within them, they do get de-motivated. This can be seen in professional circles, competitive sports, and personal lives. That’s why motivational speaking has become a career, and motivational speakers like Peter Theodorou have made a difference to many people’s lives.

In corporate circles, professionals need motivation to meet targets. If they fail to meet deadlines consistently, the organization suffers. Peter Theodorou often gets invitations to give motivational speeches in corporate organizations across the United States.

A motivational speaker is more a performer like an orator or even like a juggler. It’s not just the speech that’s important, but the manner in which the speech is given. Remember, the audience usually comprises people who need to be properly motivated to realize their full potential. The speaker must drop pearls of wisdom that crucially make the audience think differently. Interesting anecdotes entertain them, thought-provoking quotes make them think long and hard, humorous statements tickle their funny bone, and ultimately they end up with a feeling that things are a lot better than they thought they were.

That’s right – oratory can perform miracles, and can transform the outlook of the entire workforce, sometimes in an instant, and sometimes gradually. The results are clear to see.  Peter believes that nothing is impossible, since he has seen firsthand how the CEOs of many companies rose to their enviable positions from humble backgrounds and through adverse circumstances. That experience taught him that motivation does work. Motivation leads to hard work, and hard work produces solid results.

And that holds true in our personal lives as well. People struggling to quit alcoholism and drug abuse need motivation, and motivational speeches help here. An inspiring talk infuses a sense of capability in people, making them realize that the addiction is not bigger than their will power. The addiction is strong, but motivation, along with other measures employed at the rehab center, help make the impossible possible.

That’s Peter Theodorou’s mission in life – transforming the world by adding a touch of motivation!
